The Reader Panel is a dedicated group of Remodeling readers who have agreed to provide insight and opinion on important industry issues by participating in a monthly survey, the results of which are reported in a regular department on Remodeling online, as well as in Remodeling magazine. Here’s how it works:
Registration
Panelists register once, providing basic information about their company. We require registration for several reasons. First, the information we ask for helps us sort the results from monthly surveys in more meaningful ways. For example, we might want to sort results according to the total revenue of Reader Panel respondents or by their geographic location. This information is always used in aggregate, so no one’s personal information is ever used without their express permission. (Note that while Reader Panel registration information is kept confidential and is never shared, panelists who provide contact information when registering for other Hanley Wood products and events are subject to the Privacy Policy that governs all of Hanley Wood’s Web sites.)
Registration also streamlines the survey process because the basic company information questions don’t have to be asked month after month. Reader Panel members always have access to update their information or to remove themselves from the Reader Panel list.
Finally, by registering, you are distinguishing yourself as someone who wants to actively participate in these surveys. We find that we have a better response rate from remodelers who agree to be surveyed than if we simply send the survey out to everyone.
The Surveys
All registered Reader Panelists receive a survey via e-mail almost every month. Surveys cover a variety of topics such as technology, employee issues, and sales and marketing practices, among others. Surveys typically contain about 20 questions, including yes-no, multiple choice, and open-ended.
Occasionally, the editorial staff of Remodeling uses the monthly survey to poll Reader Panel members on issues surrounding the magazine content and presentation. This information is extremely useful to us as we plan future articles, and it helps us deliver a magazine that is lively, relevant, and up-to-date about industry issues.
Also, Remodeling occasionally makes the Reader Panel available to manufacturers, who prepare a survey that explores product- or service-related issues. These instances provide valuable insight for manufacturers into the needs of working remodelers, and give Reader Panel members an opportunity to communicate directly with the companies that provide the materials and services upon which much of their business success depends. As noted above, Reader Panel contact information is never given to manufacturers; however, panelists who provide contact information when registering for other Hanley Wood products and events are subject to the Privacy Policy that governs all of Hanley Wood’s Web sites.)
Giveaway
Registered Reader Panel members who complete a survey are entered into a sweepstakes. The name of the winner is sometimes published in Remodeling magazine, but only with permission. Past prizes have included a Dewalt 18-volt cordless reciprocating saw kit, a Bosch 12-inch dual bevel slide miter saw, and a Bostitch 3-Tool & Compressor Combo Pack.
Winners are required to sign a release before the prize is granted. Complete rules for the sweepstakes can be viewed via a link at the bottom of each sweepstakes e-mail that Reader Panelists receive.
The Results
Overall survey results are reported on Remodeling online and in Remodeling magazine as part of the Reader Panel department. The Report contains aggregated response data from survey questions, and sometimes includes quotations from respondents that are excerpted from responses to open-ended questions. The editorial staff of Remodeling occasionally contacts Reader Panel members to discuss a particular response, and sometimes ideas contained in responses to Reader Panel questionnaires lead to interviews that form the basis for articles in future issues of the magazine.
The Remodeling Reader Panel is a great way to provide information to you and your fellow remodelers. We hope you will decide to join your colleagues in helping to make Reader Panel a continuing success.
